September 11 Tenth Anniversary Memorial Concert

To commemorate this day, the Chancel Choir and Orchestra will be joined by the Briarcrest High School Choir and the Westminster Academy Choir to present Mozart’s Requiem. The concert will also include a visual presentation accompanied by Samuel Barber’s dramatic Adagio for Strings

Organ Demonstration with Lenora Morrow

Have you ever wanted to learn more about our magnificent organ? You will have the opportunity to hear and learn about the diversity of this great instrument and view the pipes. The demonstration will begin in the chancel choir loft following the 11 a.m. service.

Community Reformation Service

Second will again host this traditional Community Reformation Service with a dozen of our sister churches. Choirs from these churches will join in our choir loft with a brass orchestra to commemorate this significant day in the church’s reformation.

Chapel Concert: Hymns, Spirituals and Folk Songs

The Laudis Domini Vocal Ensemble will present an afternoon of great hymns, folk songs, and spirituals. Music by Alice Parker, Moses Hogan, William Dawson, and more will highlight this spiritually moving afternoon of a cappella music.

Hanging of the Green 

Join our Children’s and Youth Choirs as we bring in the holly and ivy to begin our Advent season. The service will conclude with activities for children, a live Nativity, and the decorating of the church campus.

An English Christmas

The Westminster Singers and Chamber Orchestra will present an evening of traditional British music, similar to what you might hear at Westminster Abbey or York Minster Cathedral. Music will include carols arranged by Ralph Vaughan Williams, Benjamin Britten, David Willcocks, and John Rutter.

A Festival of Carols

The annual Festival of Carols is a favorite for the Second Presbyterian Church Chancel Choir and Orchestra. This year will feature many of our seasonal favorites along with Mendelssohn’s stunning There Shall A Star Come Out of Jacob and This Christmastide. Carols will include O Come, All Ye Faithful, O Come, O Come, Emmanuel, Joy to the World and many other favorites!

Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols

The traditional Nine Lessons and Carols service will include readings from the Holy Scriptures and carols from all over the world. The congregation will join with the Chancel, Youth and Handbell Choirs to sing carols from France, England, Germany, and United States.

Advent Evensong: Celtic Carols

As we settle into the reflective worship surrounding the Christmas season, our Advent Evensong will feature the Celtic band, Planet Reel, led by Memphis Symphony Concertmaster, Susanna Gilmore-Perry. Ancient carols, liturgy, and seasonal ambience will add to the joy of this worship experience.

Christmas Eve

The Chancel Choir and string orchestra will present Morton Lauridsen’s O Magnum Mysterium and John Rutter’s Away in a Manger and Christmas Night as part of our candlelight communion service. The 11:00 p.m. service will feature harpist Marian Shaffer, violinist Long Long Kang, and organist Lenora Morrow playing Henri Büsser’s stunning Sleep of the Infant Jesus along with Terri Theil singing O Holy Night

The Memphis Masterworks Chorale

The inaugural concert of the Memphis Masterworks Chorale will be Haydn’s dramatic oratorio The Creation. Guest soloists from the Memphis communtity will join the chorale to tell this amazing story. For more information please see the website at memphismasterworks.org.

Lenten Concert: Handel’s Messiah, Parts 2 and 3

The Laudis Domini Vocal Ensemble and Chamber Orchestra will present some of the most intimate movements from Handel’s beloved oratorio Messiah. This concert will set the tone for Lenten meditation and proclaim the biblical story leading to Easter through music.

Easter Sunday Worship Celebration

The Chancel Choir and Orchestra will present music to celebrate the high holy feast of the Church celebrating Christ’s triumphant resurrection. Music will include Holst’s Te Deum, Mack Wilberg’s He Is Risen, and Jane Marshall’s My Eternal King, as well as great congregational hymns Christ the Lord Is Risen Today and In Christ Alone.

Annual Patriotic Pops Concert

Join us for our annual Patriotic Pops Concert with the Second Presbyterian Church Chancel Choir with members of the Memphis Symphony Orchestra and guest bass soloist Jonathan Blanchard. This will be another Patriotic Pops concert you will not want to miss. Selections will include Ol’ Man River, A Hymn to the Fallen from the film Saving Private Ryan, and songs from the broadway musical Big River. Don’t miss the fried chicken dinner at 5:30! You will need to purchase a ticket in advance for dinner, but there is no ticket needed for the concert. An offering will be taken.
