Here you can find opportunities to serve immediate needs right here at Second.

Adult Education

  • Adult Congregational Community Teacher There is a committee that selects and works with members wanting to teach a class at Second. This committee will contact you as the needs arise. Teach on a regular basis or as a substitute.
  • Midweek Teacher Same process as for Congregational Community teachers but for Wednesday nights during our fall and spring Midweek sessions.

Boy Scouts

  • Boy Scout Assistant Work with the leaders of Boy Scout Troops 55 or 86, which are sponsored by Second; or Pack 55 or Venture Crew. Help with special events, camp outs or special meetings.

Children

  • Extended Session Leader At 10:50 a.m. weekly or monthly to help with 3-5 yrs old during worship services.
  • Greeter Greet at the doors of the children’s Sunday school. You would be needed about 20 minutes each Sunday morning beginning at 9:15 a.m.
  • Connect Leader Interact with a group of kids from 2nd to 5th grade on Wednesday nights from 6:15-7:30 p.m.
  • Music Leader or Accompanist for Children’s Sunday school Lead children in singing or play an instrument during their Sunday school class on Sunday mornings from 9:30-9:50 a.m.
  • Sunday School Volunteer Nursery-5th grade Opportunities include teaching, leading crafts and interacting with children. 9:30-10:45 a.m.
  • Sunday School Craft Volunteer Create and prepare crafts for PK-SK children.
  • Special Friends Teacher or Assistant for Sunday School Lead or help other leaders work with special needs children and adults of various ages on Sunday mornings, 9:30-10:50 a.m. or 10:50 a.m.-12:00 p.m.
  • Visitor to New Babies Visit a new mother and deliver a flower with a baby bag on Sunday afternoons.

Caring Ministry

  • Cookie Brigade Bake cookies to be distributed by the visitation ministry once a month.
  • Transporter to Church Provide transportation via church bus or car for seniors to and from church on Sunday mornings.
  • Visit Homebound Senior Visit those who are in the hospital, nursing home, or are homebound and share encouragement with them; flexible schedule.

Hospitality

  • 2PC Teams These are teams which utilize your passion or passions. They also offer flexibility, because there are many people on a team, and you pick which opportunities you can or want to help with. Example: Baking and Cooking Team, Photography/Technical Team, Disaster Relief Team and Prayer Teams. 
  • Greeters We want to keep Second Presbyterian a warm and friendly place and need volunteers to do this! Greeters are needed at all worship services on Sunday mornings and night, Midweek sessions, special events and services.
  • Special Event Assistants When conferences, lunches or Holy Week services are held, many volunteers are needed to help with the logistics. These are throughout the year, usually during Holy Week, CityServe, Christian Life Conference, Family Life Parenting Conference, World Missions Conference, Vision Banquet and other special programs. 
  • Overnight Guests Hosts Second Presbyterian often needs to house guests like missionaries, guest speakers, visiting pastors and college students for the night or nights, and it is helpful to have members who are willing to share their homes with these guests.
  • Welcome/Information Center Assistant Serve at the Welcome Center on Sunday mornings after the 8:15 a.m. service and before and after the 11:00 a.m. service by greeting guests and visitors and providing information.

Internationals

  • Conversational English Teacher Teach English to international members and families.
  • Friendship Partner Mentor and become friends with an international family or single person and help with their spiritual growth.

Library

  • Book Repairer Place plastic covers on paperback books. (Flexible schedule)
  • Book Reviewer Read and review a specific book to discuss in a group setting. (Flexible schedule)
  • Library or Substitute Attendant Help check books in and out of the library. (Shifts are: 10:00 a.m. – 12:30 p.m., 12:30 p.m. – 3:00 p.m.)
  • Overdue Book Phone Caller Call people to remind them of overdue books.
  • Reader to the Children in our PDO Program Weekdays, 10:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m.

Mission Memphis or MissionUSA

  • Domestic Missions Prayer Partner Pray regularly or correspond with a specific ministry partner or missionary who is supported by 2PC. *See listing of ministries to pray for in back of this book.

Music, Adult

  • Beginning Handbell Choir Member Play handbells during Sunday services and on special occasions.
  • Brass Ensemble Member Play a brass instrument during selected Sunday morning worship times as part of the ensemble.
  • Chancel Choir Member Sing in the choir during Sunday morning 11:00 service (no audition required)
  • Ensemble Vocalist Sing with the ensemble on Sunday evenings.
  • Handbell Choir Member Play handbells during Sunday services and on special occasions.
  • Instrumentalist (Most Instruments) Play in worship service, as needed, Sunday mornings or evenings.
  • Music Equipment Crew Set up and take down microphones, etc., for Sunday p.m. service.
  • Substitute Pianist Play for choir rehearsals and services in the absence of regular pianist.
  • Westminster Singer Sing for Sunday morning 8:15 service and special occasions.

Music, Children

  • Assistant Choir Director Assist the director during rehearsals and be a substitute for director as needed.
  • Children’s Choir Director Direct choir, work in selecting music and working out programs for choir. Help shape the next generation of worship leaders.
  • Choir Helper Assist the choir director with attendance, supplying physical needs such as folders and instruments, and some phone calling.
  • Piano Accompanist or Substitute Accompanist Play piano for choir rehearsals and performances.

Prison Ministry

  • Teaching Women in the Pre-Release Program at the State Correctional Center Join the team and teach one-hour class on forgiveness once or twice a quarter. Training and curriculum are provided. You will have a co-teacher.

Recreation

  • Recreation Committee Serve as a committee member
  • Coach Youth Sports Coach for 1 practice a week for an hour with games on Fridays or Saturdays. Schedule: Baseball – April through June (including practices); Soccer – March through May, August through November; Basketball – November through February; Flag Football – August through November. 
  • Football Small Group Leader Serve as a small group leader for White Station football team during the season, Friday afternoon at 3:30 p.m. at White Station.

Senior Adults

  • Kirker Caller Volunteers call homebound senior adults.
  • 3M Volunteer – Senior Adults are needed to help with 3M activities and/or transportation.

Women

  • Bible Study Small Group Leader Lead or facilitate a women’s small group
  • Women’s Circle Service Worker Join a monthly circle that specifically does service work as part of their responsibilities.
  • Women Mentors Mentor through: Bloom (members mentoring members), One by One (mentoring under-resourced, expectant moms).
  • Chancel Guild If you love arrangement or creativity, this group arranges the beautiful flowers in the Sanctuary and all around the church weekly. Contact Eileen Wood by email at

Worship

  • Ushers Be a part of a team that serves one month per quarter at the service of your choice. Men and women welcome.

World Missions

  • Short Term Mission Trip Volunteer Serve as a short-term missionary on a variety of different mission trips (Medical, Non-Medical, Dental).
  • Transportation Provider Provide the use of a car or transportation to a visiting missionary during their stay in Memphis.
  • World Missions Conference Helper Serve as an assistant during the World Missions Conference.
  • World Missions Prayer Partner or Correspondent Pray regularly or correspond with a specific missionary who is supported by 2PC.
