Sovereign God
Daniel 4:28-37 | Sermon Recap & Discussion Questions

Westminster Shorter Catechism Question 8:
How does God carry out His decrees?
God carries out His decrees in creation and providence.

I. God Humbles (28-33)

The book of Daniel describes God as the sovereign ruler. The sovereign ruler over men, nations and circumstances and indeed, of all history.  We merely take one instance from this book in which God displays Himself to be sovereign. He shows it in that He humbles the greatest king on earth.

II. Main Point (34-37)

After God has had his perfect way with Nebuchadnezzar by humbling him and showing him the reality of who rules the universe, He exalts Nebuchadnezzar to an even higher estate.

Discussion Questions

  1. Nebuchadnezzar becomes animal like because of his pride. What does this tell us about the nature of what our pride does to us?
  2. God restores Nebuchadnezzar after humbling him. What does this tell us about the nature of God humbling us?
  3. What areas of your life do you find yourself being anxious and/or becoming exhausted? Is it possible you are striving with your own power and sense of self-sufficiency rather than leaning on the help God provides through his word, sacraments, and Christian community? How can you practically “put God ‘back’ on the throne”?
