2PC And Berclair Elementary Featured On Fox 13 News

Nov 10, 2010

Second Presbyterian Church and Berclair Elementary were recently featured on Fox 13 News in a segment encouraging faith-based organizations to “adopt” schools in Memphis. Mearl Purvis interviewed Kim Blankenship, Director of Volunteer Ministries at Second, and Miska Bibbs, Adopt-A-School Coordinator, on the simplicity of implementing the Adopt-A-School model and the positive change it can have upon our city schools.

Since Second’s adoption of Berclair Elementary in 2005, both the school and church have been immensely blessed by the effectiveness and growth of this adoptive relationship.

“Fox 13 is helping us spread the word that as a church you don’t have to recreate the wheel in establishing your adoption program," Kim says. "Second compiled an instructional 'blueprint'  about the process of faith-based organizations and churches adopting public schools.

“The effects of churches adopting public schools as opposed to corporations are sometimes 20 percent more effective, resulting in higher test scores, graduation rates, and teacher retention," she continues.

Yesterday, 27 volunteers from Second participated as judges for creative projects presented by each student at the bi-annual Memphis City Schools' ThinkShow at Berclair. Mayor A C Wharton came by to view the students' projects and observe the judging process. “It was a positive and encouraging morning that represents just one way we are part of what is going on at Berclair,” says Kim.
