Congregational Letter, December 2017

Dec 08, 2017

Dear Second Family,

As we look back at our recent Thanksgiving celebration and forward to the Advent season we are reminded of all that God has provided for us. First and foremost is the gift of His Son Jesus Christ that we once again prepare our hearts to receive and welcome during this season.

Most notable among those things God has provided is our new Senior Pastor, George Robertson. Welcoming him and his family into our midst has already been a great blessing. His enthusiasm for leading us boldly into the next season of our history, from the strength of a great legacy left behind, is apparent to all of us. CityServe weekend with its City Talks at Clayborn Temple included George’s ringing endorsement of Second’s commitment to all in our city. Worship attendance is increasing and our commitments for the 2018 stewardship campaign are currently ahead of where they were at this point last year. We have much to look forward to.

There have been other observable changes to celebrate. The hallways, Salmon room, Fellowship Hall, Chapel and other areas have been remodeled and updated. The fitness center has been moved to a new location that gives us a brighter more cheerful workout space. Because of the success of the Deeply Rooted capital campaign we have been able to accomplish these improvements and reduce the amount of our outstanding debt. Fulfillment of the remaining pledge balances will enable us to complete the scheduled classroom additions and make another significant principle payment on the loan at the end of December. This will keep us on track to have all projects completed and the outstanding debt eliminated by December of 2019.

Your generosity gives us yet another reason for thanksgiving. You may have observed in the bulletin and Messenger updates that we are behind budgeted contributions for the current fiscal year. Generous giving during October and November has made notable progress in changing that. In December, we traditionally receive a large percentage of our contributions. Continued generous giving this month will have us back on track and help us maintain our ministries at the level we have come to expect and enjoy.

Second Presbyterian Church continues to be greatly blessed. We celebrate our new senior pastor, our excellent facilities and our commitment to reach the lost through our ministries at Second, in our community and worldwide.

Most of all we offer our grateful thanks to God for all that He has done for us.
