Mission Memphis Key Initiative Update

Aug 13, 2010

Last week, we explained MissionUSA’s decision to take on a new organizational structure — formally changing its name to Mission Memphis, in an effort to clearly distinguish between its local and national ministry efforts. We updated you on one of MM’s key initiatives, Su Casa Family Ministries, as part of a three-week series of initiative updates.

This week, we’re focusing on Berclair Elementary.

Second officially “adopted” Berclair Elementary School in November of 2005. We began classroom involvement and tutoring in the Spring of 2006. Congregational Communities have “adopted” classrooms in the kindergarten through the 3rd grade.   In addition to tutoring and providing administrative assistance to the teachers, volunteers take responsibilities for class parties, host special recognitions for teachers and staff, assist with preparations for and serve as monitors for the annual TCAP Test, and participate in an annual spring clean-up with the Berclair faculty and parents of the children.

Because of our significant involvement at Berclair, the Office of the Memphis City Schools District Superintendent frequently has referred those interested in adopting a school to us for advice.  We have worked with that Office in organizing a collaborative of churches who agree to adopt a MCS school.

Significant numbers of volunteers are needed for the fall to be involved in the adopting of classrooms. We encourage Congregational Communities to participate by adopting a class.
