These classes are a great place to get to know others and to get involved in our ministries at Second.

Our adult Sundays School classes meet on campus on Sundays at 9:45-10:45am. View the list below to find a class right for you! 

Nursery is available during Sunday School for ages 3 and under. Visit 2pckids.org for more details. 

Young Adults 


From college students to young professionals to parents with young children, there is a Sunday School class for you! These classes range from early 20s to early 40s.

There are over 10 classes to choose from for middle adults from international classes to single adults to large groups and small groups.  These classes normally range in age from 40 to 70.

Sunday School Classes

Calvin Class

Sunday, 9:45am - 10:45am Room: College Room (E2139)

This group will gather during 2024 Sunday School to discuss John Calvin’s “Institutes of the Christian Religion” and that week’s Bible passage that corresponds to the reading in Calvin. Participants in this Sunday School will consist of those who are committed to follow a reading plan of Books 1–3 of Calvin’s “Institutes.” Mary Hannah will lead the team of discussion facilitators. This class meets in the college room (E2139).

This Sunday School class for individuals with special needs meets at 9:45am in room N-101. Bible lessons, activities, and games are adapted for all ages and functioning levels.

Wanderers

Sunday, 9:45am - 10:45am Room: B102

With a focus on community building, The Wanderers rotates through sermon discussion, topical lessons, and hearing from ministry partners. The class attendees are predominantly in their 30s and 40s with young children, all are welcome, especially those who simply aren’t sure where to begin at Second Pres. Wanderers is a smaller class with approximately 30 regular attendees. (temporarily meeting in PDS amphitheater)

Sunday, 9:45am - 10:45am Room: PDS Hussey Commons

This 2024 calendar year, a group will gather during Sunday School to discuss their Bible reading for the previous week. Participants in this Sunday School will consist of those who are committed to follow a reading plan that takes them through the whole Bible from January to December. Bill Jorgensen will lead the team of discussion facilitators. Gatherings will take place in the PDS Hussey Commons (EC-1114).

Chapel Class

Sunday, 9:45am - 10:40am Room: C-310

Adults aged 70 and up. Membership includes many widowed members along with married couples. The class averages 40-50 each week. David Bowen teaches Bible-based lessons via lectures. Members enjoy supporting several ministries including MIFA, Food Bank, Memphis Union Mission, Peer Power, Salvation Army, Neighborhood Christian Center, Binghamton Christian Center, and Samaritan’s purse. Members of this class will find a good combination of worship, Bible study and fellowship.

Jeb Russell

Sunday, 9:45am - 10:40am Room: C-310

Adults aged 65-80, members include singles and marrieds. Class size averages 50-60. Rotating teachers teach from the Bible in a lecture format. The class supports these ministries financially and in service: Bethany Christian Services, Binghampton Christian Academy, Discipling Men, Knightlife, and Memphis Union Mission. They have an effective ministry to one another which includes a weekly prayer chain. They enjoy fellowship through a Dinner/Lunch 6 program and occasional dinners.

Single Adults at Second

Sunday, 9:45am - 10:40am Room: B-101

Single, widowed, and divorced adults aged 65+. Average attendance is 15. Paul Neal leads with topical teaching that includes class participation. The class actively participates in various churchwide events and community ministries. Fellowship activities include planned brunches, outing, game nights, movies, and theater. They also enjoy seasonal parties.

International Christian Fellowship

Sunday, 9:45am - 10:40am Room: D-116

Both married and single adults aged 22-65 years. Average attendance of 20-30 with an array of nationalities represented. The class enjoys teaching primarily from Mike Rhodes with lecture and discussion as well as singing praise songs and times of prayer. Fellowship activities include monthly potluck lunches and holiday gatherings. The class promotes small group activities. On-going service projects include Refuge Empowerment, Binghampton Christian Academy, and Academic/Professional Asian Christian Fellowship.

Covenant Women‘s Bible Study

Sunday, 9:45am - 10:40am Room: Large Conference Room

Close-knit small group of women ranging in age from 55-75 with both married and singles. They enjoy teaching from Anita Pollard that includes lectures with discussion and Bible study. Serving Christ Community Church is their primary service project. Fellowship activities include “Fellowship Sundays” and class parties.

Growing in Grace

Sunday, 9:45am - 10:40am Room: DB-02

Ages 50-80 with both marrieds and singles. Class attendance averages 60+. Don Riley and guest teachers provide Bible-based teaching in a lecture format with some discussion. Service projects focus on Berclair Elementary to provide weekly classroom volunteers and an annual dinner for parents and staff. The class is divided into Shepherd Groups for fellowship, prayer, and support.

Sunday, 9:45am - 10:40am Room: B-100

Ages 60-75 with marrieds, divorced, widowed and singles. Class attendance averages about 20 members. Rotating teachers provide Bible-based teaching primarily by lecture with some class discussion. This class often includes music and has a focus on prayer. They serve at Nathan Street Ministries. Fellowship activities include sharing group meals and informal gatherings throughout the year, as well as an annual Christmas party.

Ages 65-80 with both marrieds, divorced, widowed, and singles. The class averages 25-30 members each Sunday. This class enjoys teaching from series on different books of the Bible from rotating teachers. They have small groups, and class fellowships include a Christmas party plus Missions Cottage dinners and Dinner 8 groups.

Community for Life

Members range in age from 45-60 and include both married and singles. Neal McAtee is the primary teacher. They enjoy a variety of social events and service projects with ministries including Su Casa, Refugee Empowerment Program, Red Zone, Binghampton Christian Academy, and Memphis Gridiron Ministry.

Sunday, 9:45am - 10:40am Room: E-105

Primarily married couples aged late 30s – mid-50s with an average class size of 30-35. This class is taught by Albert Throckmorton and Kevin McQuillen, primarily in a lecture format with occasional class discussion. The class is broken into shepherding groups of 5-6 couples. Service projects include reading with and mentoring students at Berclair Elementary. They enjoy two large social functions each year.

Sunday, 9:40am - 10:45am Room: DB11

Ages 30-55, married and single. Average class size is 20-25. Josh Preston and John Laughlin teach this class with a mix of lecture, interactive discussion, and member interviews / prayer.  Emphasis is given to further incorporating our faith into our daily lives. They seek to build community through sharing our concerns, praying together as a class, and gathering during class and outside of class for fellowship. A men’s small group meets on Wednesday mornings and topical women’s small groups meet throughout the year.

Ages 22-28, single and married. Average class size is 80. Class is taught primarily by Brad Morrow and Philip James using mostly lecture and discussion. Class includes small groups with mentors. Service projects include the 2PC nursery and Joy Prom. Class members enjoy informal recreational activities on Sunday afternoons, community groups every other week, and large group cookouts and parties.

Ages 35-50, married. Average class size is 35-40. Kevin McQuillen teaches this discussion-oriented class. Mentors are active in the class. There are a few small groups available with plans to increase the number. Service projects include serving at Nathan Street Ministries, Ten45, and OMOM. This class enjoys quarterly “Fellowship Sundays.”

Ages 28-34, single and married. Average class size is 60. Barton Kimbro, Mary Hannah, and Paul Norman teach the class using a combination of lecture and group discussion. Class includes small groups with mentors. Service projects include Orange Mound Outreach Ministries, 2PC nursery, and Nathan Street. Fellowship activities include monthly socials, community groups, and parties for Christmas, Super Bowl, etc.

Foundations
Late 20s to late 30s, single and married. Average class size is 50. Class is taught by Todd Erickson and John Laughlin mainly through lecture and some class discussion. Participation in small groups with mentors is encouraged. Orange Mound Outreach Ministries is the primary focus for class service. Fellowship activities include monthly “drop-ins” and other events throughout the year.

Class service projects include Berclair Elementary and Memphis Gridiron Ministry. The class enjoys informal lunches after church, a Chili Cook-off, Crawfish Boil, and potluck dinners.

Sunday, 9:40am - 10:45am Room: Fellowship Hall

Single and married adults aged 40 and up. Todd Erickson and Larry Jensen are co-teachers for this class, which averages about 80 people.  Their class service projects include Berclair Elementary, the Neighborhood Christian Centers and support for mission activities in Mozambique. The class is broken into Shepherd Groups, each of which has its own fellowship activities. The Sojourners Class enjoys 1-2 fellowship events each year during the CC hour.
